Description:

Work with the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs, the Career and Academic Advising Offices on a wide-array of initiatives, campaigns, projects, and office administration tasks to help sophomores, juniors, and seniors persist and graduate on time. A year long commitment is needed for this job and it will be expected that you work on campus (not remotely). Tasks associated with this job include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide peer mentorship to Sophomore, Junior, and Senior student cohorts including personal growth, milestone planning, professional development, and career readiness.
  • Help students develop actionable four-year degree and career roadmaps for both inside and outside the classroom to prepare them for their future goals.
  • Create and facilitate a Student Leadership Academy (SUULA) that is modeled after President Wyatt’s President’s Leadership Academy.
  • Staff the front desks as needed to welcome students and answer related questions.
  • Develop a system to track co-curricular transcripts/resumes to help students see the leadership skills they learned during their time at SUU and from their classes to showcase their success while in college both inside and outside the classroom (grad schools, applying for jobs, etc.).
  • Disseminate regular communication/newsletters to students regarding campus events, internship/job opportunities, campus resources, and other personal and relevant outreach to students.
  • Develop Sophomore, Junior, and Senior Clubs/Councils to give feedback, plan events, help with projects, provide class-specific interaction for students, etc.
  • Develop more sophisticated class-specific support websites online.
  • Facilitate and partner on large campus events like Food and Faith, Graduation, Parent and Family Weekend, etc.
  • Work with FYE and STIL Offices to provide unique initiatives and programming for different pockets of students/demographics that are underrepresented.
  • Work closely with the Student Involvement and Leadership Office to plan class-focused events similar to Sundaes on Sunday, C-day hike, Service Saturday, Sophomore Halfway Dinner, etc. for all classes.
  • Create optional training opportunities for students that cover topics like finances, advisor trainings, event planning, communication, team work, motivation, and/or specialized training needed specifically for their organization.
  • Create a system for Leadership graduation stoles or degree badges.
  • Develop new and support current programming for students who are unsure of their major/exploring their options such as Choose Your Major Fair, Exploration Workshops, Grad Nights, etc.
  • Discern needs and concerns of students to make actionable projects to complete.
  • Creating marketing campaigns that help students see the opportunities to grow professionally, personally or get involved such as Toilet Times, Leadership Callouts, etc.
  • Night and weekend work will be expected at times.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Must possess excellent relational skills, emotional stability, and personal maturity.
  • Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, and communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work with different campus constituencies.
  • A commitment to all students and their total development, both curricular and co-curricular.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with and relate to a diverse student population.
  • Strong oral and written skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational, leadership, and public relations skills.
  • Must be able to lead, motivate, and inspire students.
  • Experience in overseeing large-scale events.
  • Capable of organizing a wide range of diverse tasks and activities efficiently and effectively.
  • Capable of establishing and maintaining effective, cooperative working relationships with various campus and community constituents.
  • Experience in student programming and/or student organization advising.
  • Experience planning and implementing orientation programs on a college campus.
  • Ability to work with students, faculty, staff, and administrative personnel.
  • Understanding of student needs and growth.
  • Ability to respect and maintain confidentiality in records and communication.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations preferred - including underrepresented, transfer, international, and non-traditional students.
  • Enthusiasm for working with all students.
  • Preference will be given to students who can commit to this job from January 2021 through April 2022.
  • Must be able to work on campus November 30-December 17, 2020 and the week of January 4-8, 2021.
